What If "More" Doesn't Mean Bigger?

Week 2: What Purpose Really Looks Like

Andrea's Note

Last week, we talked about paying attention to the restlessness, the ideas, burdens, questions, and dreams that keep coming back.

But once we notice that something might be stirring, it's easy to quickly move on to another question:

What's the big thing God wants me to do?

What am I supposed to build?

Launch?

Start?

Become?

At some point, many of us started to link purpose with things like being seen, achieving goals, having titles, building platforms, and making a measurable impact.

But what if we've made finding our purpose harder than God meant it to be?

Here's something I've learned on my own journey:More doesn't always mean bigger. Sometimes, more means going deeper.

More faithful.

More surrendered.

More courageous.

More willing to follow God in the life you already have.

This week, we're taking another look at what purpose really means. Maybe it's time to let ourselves stop measuring it by how impressive it seems.

With love,
Andrea

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Colossians 3:23–24

Notice those first three words: Whatever you do.

Purpose is not just about having a microphone, a title, or an audience.

Sometimes, purpose shows up in the most ordinary moments.

Purpose in Perspective

Purpose Is Bigger Than a Platform

In 2024, two different people spoke words to me about becoming more visible.

Back then, I didn't really know what that meant.

Now, looking back, I see something I didn't understand then: Being visible wasn't the goal. It was just part of being obedient.

That difference matters.

If I had focused on being visible, I might have started measuring my purpose by numbers.

How many people are watching?

How many people are listening?

How many followers do I have?

How many books have I sold?

But God didn't ask me to measure things that way.

He asked me to focus on being faithful.

Sometimes purpose looks like speaking to thousands.

Sometimes it looks like encouraging one woman.

Sometimes it's writing the book.

Sometimes it's caring for your family.

Sometimes it's leading.

Sometimes it's learning.

Sometimes it's building.

Sometimes it's healing.

And sometimes, your purpose in a certain season might even be to rest.

A better question isn't: "Does this look important?"

Instead, it's this: "Am I being faithful with what God has given me in this season?"

Purpose Can Change Its Expression

Your purpose can stay grounded in the same values, even if how you live it looks different over time.

You might teach in a classroom one part of your life, then share your lessons through a podcast.

At one time, you could lead a whole organization; at another, you could focus on mentoring just one person.

You might spend years caring for others, and then come to a time when God invites you to let others care for you.

Just because things are different doesn’t mean they have less purpose.

We need to stop comparing one season of life to another.

Everyday Obstacles

Comparison: When you see someone else's calling as more impressive, you might start to downplay your own.

The "Big Purpose" Myth: You might think your purpose has to turn into a career, ministry, business, platform, or something visible to others.

Chasing Recognition: Sometimes, without noticing, you start to judge your impact by how much attention it gets.

Missing Today's Assignment: It's easy to get so focused on what God might do in the future that you miss what He wants you to do right now.

Faith-Based Solutions

Think about what "more" really means: Ask yourself this question: More of what, exactly?

Maybe God isn't asking you to do more.

Maybe He wants you to trust Him more.

Maybe He's inviting you to surrender more. Or perhaps to love more deeply.

Maybe He's encouraging you to speak with more courage. Or to be more faithful with what He's already given you.

Don't compare the importance of your assignments: If God gave you something to do, its value isn't about how visible it is.

Appreciate the season you're in right now: Don't look down on where you are while you wait for what's next.

There could be purpose right where you are.

Try looking at faithfulness differently: Instead of asking yourself, "Was it successful?"

Try asking instead, "Was I faithful to what God asked me to do?" That's a very different way to measure things.

Becoming in Action

Find Purpose in the Ordinary

This week, try to find one everyday place to live intentionally and with purpose. It might be:

A conversation you've been putting off.

An act of service.

A boundary you need to honor.

An unfinished project that deserves your attention.

Encouraging someone who needs it.

It could even mean taking a break when your body tells you to rest.

Whatever you decide to do, give it your best effort without worrying if anyone sees it.

At the end of the day, take a moment to ask yourself: "How did I live purpose today?"

You might find that purpose has been present in places you did not notice before.

Reflection Questions

  • Have I been thinking that having more always means doing something bigger?
  • Are there ways I'm already living out my purpose that I haven’t noticed?
  • Am I missing what I'm meant to do today because I’m waiting for something that looks more impressive?
  • Have I been comparing my life or calling to someone else’s?
  • What does it mean to be faithful right now, in this season of my life?

Continue the Conversation

Maybe you've been waiting for your purpose to seem impressive before you believe it matters.

But it already matters.

God can work through big moments on a stage.

But He also works in kitchens.

He works in offices, too.

He's present in hospital rooms.

He's at work in classrooms.

He's there in living rooms.

And in simple conversations between two people.

Your purpose doesn't depend on how many people are watching.

So if God calls you to more, don't assume He wants you to become bigger.

He might be inviting you to go deeper.

To be more faithful.

To be more available.

To be more courageous.

To be more surrendered.

I'd love to hear from you this week. Where are you starting to notice purpose in the everyday parts of your life?

Just hit reply and let me know. Your answer doesn't have to be profound. I'd especially love to hear about the ordinary places where you're starting to see purpose in a new way.

Let's keep the conversation going on Empowered to Live as we explore what it means to be Called to More.

Next week, we'll talk about something many of us know well: When fear tries to stop your calling.

Sometimes, recognizing what God is asking from us is one thing.

Letting ourselves be seen doing it is another.

May God help you recognize the purpose already present in your life.

May He free you from comparing your assignment with someone else's and remind you that faithfulness does not need an audience to have value.

May you have the wisdom to honor the season you are in, the courage to embrace what He has given you, and the grace to remember that more is not always about being bigger. Sometimes, it is about going deeper.

Until next week, stay encouraged, stay faithful, and remember to live empowered.
